What saves them from the harm that most of their victims face is that they don't tense up during the accident and therefore do not suffer the debilitating injury that their victims do...that is they are not fighting the force that throws them about and tearing muscles or breaking bones from stiffening up and holding on.

Being loose and "going with the flow" leads to less injury for the drunk than his victim.

When I was in the armed forces, we were taught that drunks often survive drowning for the same reasons. They are too damn drunk to realize they have fallen into water, so they don't have the "choking reaction" that kills the rest of us...they just continue to breathe underwater, and don't even realize that what they are breathing is water.

We as human beings still have the ability to breathe fluid. We learned it in the womb, and it is an ability that never leaves us--if we can get past the choking reaction. (Remember "The Abyss" and the deep-diving suits that used a liquid enriched with oxygen?)

while it is true a drunk driver may have a slightly less chance of dying in a crash from being relaxed and not tense causing less internal damage, a durnk driver cann possibly bleed more from thinner blood and higher speeds increase trauma to a person, so no definately not a slim chance but a good one.

Drunk drivers usually do walk away from accidents due to the "relaxed nature" of their muscles. One friend walked away with a broken collar bone. He said he just flippy-flopped when he totaled his vehicle. Another friend showed up at my house with a ten-inch gash across the top of his head, but he walked to my house four miles away.

However, being a drunk driver rear-ending a tractor-trailer won't save the drunk driver's life. Another friend of mine literally lost his head...no saving him!

drunk people have a higher rate of survival because they are not tense in a wreck. they are mostly limp and maybe dont feel as much. but they kill others and I have no sympathy for a drunk driver.

False.

However, if driver is passed out because of being drunk, much less likely to get in fisticuffs with the other driver, and thus not get killed that way.
