Should you be required to ride in a car with a stranger during drivers ed? In my opinion, you shouldn't. I would not feel safe being in a car with someone I barely know because my life is basically in their hands. I mean, I know there's a brake on the passenger side...but really that's not much protection. I think it should only be for you to learn to drive...not to watch perfect strangers drive and be so nervous you can't even pay attention to what they're doing anyway.

The "stranger" I'm referring to is the person driving...not the teacher. Sitting in the back seat while someone you don't know is driving.

Im assuming that you are referring to riding in the backseat while another student is learning from the Instructor.......
If you sit in the rear seat behind the Instructor, you will have a good view of what the other student is doing. By listening to the Instructor's explanation of things while sitting back there, you are more relaxed and can absorb information without being as stressed and see and hear things from a different perspective. You are more nervous and anxious while you are behind the wheel and may miss some important information from your Instructor. This is why Instructors repeat information several times in several ways.
Driving Instructors are monitored a couple of times each year, they must provide a medical exam with their licence renewal and have a criminal records check too. They also must attend several hours of training before and during their careers. These people are very interested in providing optimum safety conditions within the "in car" teaching environment. They enjoy seeing the progress each student makes throughout their course of lessons and they have a lot of information to share.
With two students in the vehicle, a lot of discussions arise from various scenarios occurring in traffic.
I would encourage you to sit back, listen attentively and pick up pointers from the Instructor as well as learn from the other student driver's errors and positive manoevers too!
Enjoy, life is for learning!

Right or wrong, it's done because it costs 1/4 as much to teach four kids at once than it does to teach them one at a time. Schools are always tight on money.
A driving instructor has probably been behind the wheel for a dozen years before you were born; so he or she knows enough to never take students into situations that the instructor feels the student wouldn't be able to handle.
There is an added bonus to being a passenger watching another student. You can see with your own eyes what happens when the rules of the road are followed carefully, and what happens when they are not. I don't mean accidents, but littler things, like not stopping completely at a stop sign, or not keeping in the center of your lane.

The stranger is either another student or your instructor if your having a problem with confidence in the teacher you really need to relax. You can't drive alone when you have a permit.. only when you have a valid license and that is what you are learning with the teacher.
The teacher has good reflexes, he/she are trained to help nervous students, and yes it is enough protection. Millions of people have learned that way and you will too.
Heck you think doctors operate by themselves without an instructor on hand? same thing.. you don't do anything alone until you know for sure what you are doing.

It isn't a stranger, it is a teacher. The subject is driving. You can't drive alone on a permit, so if you want to pass drivers' ed you have to be instructed by that teacher. And that extra brake pedal is not for you, it is for the instructor while you are behind the wheel.

Drivers ed is a cottage industry. It helps people to learn to drive and helps you get your license. Might as well not complain about a drivers ed teacher you hardly know, it is their job to help you learn. Or would you rather be sitting in the back seat of a patrol car with a cop you hardly know?

Part of Drivers Ed is observation of others driving manerisms and yes, mistakes. You can learn a lot observing others at the wheel and the instructors reactions to their driving. I say all this assuming you are talking about Drivers Ed in school...Its all part of the class, if it wasn't safe, I'm sure they wouldn't do it........########

that is true, but then again if you think about it, you have teachers that are strangers that you do not know, at jobs you are working with people you dont know, its just how things are. you work with people you dont know & get to know them, and i think if you have a certain person that u like and feel like you can trust you can request to have them next time.

Pay the larger fee and take private lessons. Just you and the instructor in the car.
