The longest standard articulated trailer used on U.K. roads is 13.6m (44ft). A 6x2 tractor unit will add another 3m (10ft) when coupled up. It is possible to turn a rig around in just over the length of the trailer, but a few more feet of room always helps!!

with 13m triaxle trailer you need a little over 50 ft because on a jacknife turn after a certain point you need to straighten the unit or the trailer will go back as it spins, hence all the bent lamposts at rdcs and diy centre yards, a tandem trailer will turn in a shorter space but the rear overhang is longer than a triaxle, then you can get shorter trailers, deep 5th wheel pins longer overhangs, sliding 5th wheels, thats what employers mean when they ask for a experienced drivers and some people think they are being unfair, but exp is gained by damage? i.e. whoops i wont do that again,

Slowlaner has got this about right, so please give him alll the thumbs up.

I would just add, that once a cab is at 90 degrees to the trailer, the overall length is 40ft for the trailer, and roughly 10ft for the tractor-unit including door-mirrors, which adds up to about 50ft.

As slow-laner will know, actually getting to that point takes a bit more space, so you have to add a fair-bit for the jackknife to take place; thus increasing the turning-circle on the move to about 60ft, but it's amazing how little space an artic needs to turn-around completely.

I am often amazed how it is possible to turn my artic around in the back-yards of supermarkets, which never look big enough, but actually turn out to be.

the length is down to the trailer used the longest is about 40foot the turning circle comes down to the following things the condition of the surface turning on (loose uneven will make it larger) the level of the turning circle (slope flat ) the weight will affect the above a little but not to worry to much about and the most important thing is the driver
