CPS took my grandchildren from my daughter, now I have legal custody. When I took the kids into my home, CPS asked if I needed any changes made to my house because of the kids. I thought it was temorary so I said no. That was almost 5 years ago. One child is a boy, one is a girl, my home is two bedroom. I needed to seperate the kid bedroom. I am now out of a lot of money and wondering if there is some way of deducting these expenses on my taxes.

I will not have my son for a dependent on my next tax return & will not be able to claim his education credits & my tax preparer suggested I change my number of exemptions from 1 to 0 otherwise I I would be paying in next year instead of a refund & I was wondering if this was the right thing to do?

I've filed my taxes thru software last year, but I was wondering if I should file thru some firm this year... please comment after reading my situation. I've graduated from university this year, bought a new car, and have gotten sick (2nd degree infection, ER visits, in another words, HUGE medical bills--how big? More than what I make this year). Given my situation, should I file thru software? or is it better to file thru something like the H&R block? Do the softwares give me forms to fill out for cars and my medical bills? Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!

I bought a house last year and thought it might be a good idea to have a 'professional' figure my property tax and mortgage tax deductions.

After I complied ALL the information for them, it took a matter of 7 min for them to put my numbers into their system. After it was all calculated, they told me to pay them $285!!!!!??? I about passed out. I told the agent that I NEVER would have used their services had I known it was going to cost that much! She just rolled her eyes and said it was a complex form because I itemized. I was then given two options.

1) pay now
2) have it taken out of my refund for a small $29.95 fee.

I feel I was totally ripped off: Get me in there, do a super quick data entry procedure, charge me an insane amount of money...for that kind of cash I'd at least like to get SOME kind of tax advice or a budget plan or a detailed walk through of what was being done. Nothing, just my taxes filed and sent out the door.

Am I being unreasonable?
