Federal Excise Tax deduction.

Go to irs.gov and search on "federal excise" refund and the rules will pop up.

If you are not a business make it easy on yourself and just file the flat rate. Otherwise you have to pull 3 years of phone bills and figure out what you actually paid in the tax for LONG distance alone. It would take me too long to figure it out (and I'm an accountant) just take the flat rate.

i just asked this question today, at jackson hewitt, and yes it is true, look at irs website under telephone excise tax, it appears we shouldnt have paid so much tax on long distance and you dont even need receipts for yor proof at tax time, they have a general tax table they go by and its more based on the dependents in your house hold rather than the actual amount of taxes you paid to the phone companies that were suppose to return this money and didnt so the govt is doing it for them, gee how nice huh...lol anyhow i was also told its closer to 30 bucks a person and like 50 for 2 60 for 3 and so on, check out the irs website under excise tax.....

You can chose between the "standard" amount which is $30 or if you have all your phone bills (and you are not missing a single one of them) you can add up the amount spent on long distance tax. Go to www.irs.gov for further assistance.
