Lives alone except for cat and boyfriend, supplied all expenses for a year, bought and paid for home from private owner in 2006. Moved there in Nov. 2005. Can she file as Head of Household need answer fast.

To claim 'Head of Household' she must have at least 1 qualifying dependent. He boyfriend does not qualify her for 'head of household' filing status. If they lived together for ALL of 2006, he MAY be a dependent for other tax purposes. See page 17 of the 1040 instructions for more on filing status.

Her filing status is single. If her boyfriend had little or no income & lived with her for more than 6 months, she may be able to claim him as a dependent. But she would be single with a dependent. She would need to have a child as a dependent in order to qualify as Head of Household.

Head of household is for unmarried individuals with qualifying dependents. If you have no dependents, you are not head of household, you are single.

No. That is for people with children.

She needs to file as single.
