If I put in my W4 9 witholdings I pay low taxes. but If I do not cover my liable tax amount. I will owe at the end of the year, that I undestand. Now, say I have a mortage interest of more than my liable tax amount. Does it mean that I get a refund of the amount of my interest paid minus my liable tax. Or is it that I have to have paid taxes more than the decutions in order to get the deduction.hope someone understands and has a good answer thanks

I am working a summer job and filled out all my paperwork for taxes. I was pretty sure I read something about being exempt from federal taxes if I'll make under $6500 or something this year. (Which I will). My father however believes this is untrue. Anyone know? Thanks.

I have a coworker that does work on the side. (construction). He makes about $20,000 a year from just this and doesn't claim ANY of it on taxes. It makes me so mad because I also do work on the side and claim it all. Is there a number I can call to get him audited?

We are together as a couple and will share in expenses, so no childsupport will be given. We live in Illinois and I don't know where to look to see if there are any rules or laws that govern who claims the baby in this kind of situation.

A woman's father lived with her and her husband all of 2004 until his death in Nov. 2004 (so I know that makes him a dependent). here is my problem, his sources of income were 1900 (salary - taxable), 3200 SS benefits (non-taxable), and 3500 unemploy benefits (taxable). First question, would this be gross income of 5400 (3500+1900) since the SS benefits are excluded? Here is my problem, he deposited $5000 of into a savings account and never used it (it does not specify what sources he took the $5000 from) so, do i assme that the $5000 came from the $5400 since that is his true GI? Also, it says the "remainder" of his support of $7500 was provoded to him by his daughter and son-in-law, $5100 of that was from funeral expenses, are funeral expenses considered support under the dependency test?
Bottom line, can this father be considered a dependent, or does he not meet the 04 criteria (50% support from child) and is his GI > $3100? Please help, thank you very muc
