My son began supporting me in March 2006. Originally, his accountant told him he could claim me on his taxes as a dependent, now the accountant is saying he can't claim me because it wasn't for the entire year. Is this right? Thank you.

I recently read that a couple filed chapter 7 bankrupcty and they did not have to pay their tax return to the bankrupcty estate and I had to pay 85 percent of it? Is this legal in the state of Montana. I thought that a chapter 7 meant no asset case, any feedback.

I do not understand why a national sales tax is not instituted in this country. This would be the best way to generate income on a federal level. Even drug-pushers, and organized crime woul dbe chipping in due to the fact that anything they buy would be hit by this tax. It also forces those who consume more to bear the brunt of the load (i.e. wealthy and expensive lifestyles will supplement more based on their participation - buying more expensive goods and services).

My parents accountant told them they could get a copy of this form online, but he didn't tell them where to go. They need one already filled out with their info. not a blank form. They never got theirs in the mail from the IRS. Any help would be great, thank you!

I am an employee of the company that filed the 1099MISC. Without my knowledge my employer filed a 1099MISC recently for 2005. This prompted the IRS to send me a letter looking for almost $3,000 in back taxes, interest, and penalties. The situation is I get an additional $300 expense reimbursment in my paycheck in exchange for lowering my annual sallary by that amount. Is there anything I can do about this? I can't beleive they filed this form 2 years later and the first I hear of it is through the IRS. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

In 2006 my elderly mother-in-law had $6,000 in normal interest/dividend income, $5,000 in IRA withdrawals, and $12,000 in social security.

Do she have to file a federal or tax return? She lives in Minnesota.

Took out $10,000 from an IRA to put down on a house, we closed late December. Also paid half year property tax upfront.
I realize the 10g will be taxed as income, but what kind of breaks do we get for buying a house. Obviously we don't have much interest paid towards our mortgage, nor have we saved much receipts last year b/c we were'nt planning on buying a house. In this situation would we still go with a standard deduction or try to itemize?

I didn't pay taxes because I didn't work for 4 years to get my bachelor's degree in accountancy. I am 37 years old. Will this cause a problem? Also I have very low GPA. Will they even consider me with these two negative items?

Ok, here goes, my mom was awarded full custody of her great nieces (my cousins) since their births. After mom took seriously ill, I moved into the home w/her and the girls and was their sole provider. I filed taxes and claimed all of them as dependents and was told by the tax preparer that I qualified for the Earned Income Credit. My claim was processed and I received a refund plus the EIC. The following year, the same thing....then I get a letter saying that I was not eligible to receive the EIC due to the kids not being a part of my "immediate" family and they are now requesting ALL of the money back PLUS interest. I filed an appeal and received a certified letter saying they would be back in touch with me. Six months later I get a letter from the tax court (certified mail) stating that I had failed to submit forms and fees and my case was dismissed. The IRS claims they sent a time stamped letter via regular mail and it's my word against theirs if I recv'd it. Can I fight this?

Thanks for the answer Bostonia. To ask a bit further on the taxes paid: These were taxes paid county and school at time of settlement. It was new development, and basically we had to pay the amount the builder had paid in these taxes. It amounted to $37xx. Can we claim this as taxes paid even though it is not reflected on our 1098 Forms from the lender? Thanks!

We purchased a home Jan 2006 because of relocation w/ a job. The move was 850+ miles. Can I deduct things like the interest from (22 days), county property tax and school taxes (included in the closing costs - because this was new construction), attorney's fees, etc. Please help.
