This amounts to many thousands of dollars per year in expense to her, although I am never paid any actual money - I just basically live with her for free.

Can she deduct those costs as "nursing care"?

If a person won, let's say, a $10k sweepstakes / lottery; and nothing was taken out. Does that person need to pay the taxes immediatley or can they wait to claim the winnings on their taxes at the end of the year?

I found a error on our taxes filed this year. They had filed my capatial gains all as short term gains vs long term. I had around 4,500 of long term capital gain. Our joint income was around 70,000. What is the difference on ther error of it all being in short term vs long term? I called out accountant and waiting for a reply back. What is the process and is there any additional cost to me? Also what is the tax saving from the mistake?

I worked as a day care provider for a friend of mine who had three kids. I was paid by the state of Michigan rather than the parent so instead of a W2 form, I just received a letter from the Department of Human Services stating how much I was paid throughout the year. This was my first year doing that kind of work and I would prefer to file my taxes myself but I am not sure how to claim that income or what form to use.

OK...Yes I'm a complete idiot! I've had my taxes done for about a month and a half. I just saw that commercial on tv that reminds you that taxes are due in a week. I went to sign them and now I can't find them anywhere! My fiance and I have looked everywhere and they nowhere to be found. I did them using tubotax and can surely reprint them but what do I do about my W2? I will be getting a refund so I don't owe anything.
I'll keep feverishly looking but I'm praying they didn't somehow get thrown out.
I just need to know what I do next if I can't locate them before the deadline.
Thanks soooo much!

For many reasons I owe the IRS about 14,000 dollars. I have about a whopping 18,000 dollars in my 401k. I keep trying to pay the IRS, I can't pay enough for it to make a dent. Please, any suggestions, any IRS agents out there?:)

I am married. My W2 shows "single" for marital status and my wife's says "married". We claim federal and state exemptions/allowances of 1/0. I noticed that my withholding is about 18% of my income afer reductions, while hers is about 11%. Because of this, we owe taxes on this years tax return. Is she supposed to fill out her W4 saying "single"?

My wife has a sole proprietorship and did some work for a company that cut a check to her in December, but which was not received until January 2007. She is using cash accounting and considers this money recevied in 2007. However, the 1099-MISC indicates it was income paid in 2006.

I'm trying to do the taxes and her QuickBooks indicates this is not taxible for 2006 (since the money wasn't received until 2007). But the 1099-misc says otherwise. What should I do - either
(a) change her books to indicate it was received in 2006
(b) ask the company to reissue (or retract somehow) the 2006 1099-misc
(c) don't include the 1099-misc in the return and wait for the IRS to ask me about it, or
(d) something else I haven't thought of?

Thanks for your help.

I hear so much about how you won't have enough to itemize to overcome the standard deduction if you don't own a home.

However, I paid almost $4000 in state taxes in 2006, which is close to my standard deduction of $5150 (single). I've heard that you can itemize state taxes. Does that mean many people can have enough to itemize (using their state taxes) without owning a home?

During the previous tax period I went from being a full-time student/dependent to niether. I quit the job that I was at when I filed for exempt. When I started the new job I was no longer either of the previous status' that qualified me for tax exempt. So that job pulled out taxes.

Do I still have to pay the taxes that i was originally exempt from (1st Job) when I file my taxes even though I was exempt at the time the were taken?

My husband has left the country and earns a lot of money abroad. He doesn't give me a penny. I am earning nothing yet, but trying to find work. He left a year ago and hasn't earned anything in America during that time.
Should I file taxes with him or without him? I have children living with me, he pays no child support.
I am worried I will get audited for this big round zero, not that I'm doing anything wrong. I'm not sure if he is though because he earns so much in Canada but is planning to declare zero taxes in America. Should I file separately? Is it better with impending divorce to file together before I start divorce proceedings?
