I was wondering what are the rules on filing your taxes being self-employed. I've been told to file quarterly but also if you file and pay before jan 31 of the next year its the same thing. When do they penalize you? Cant you just hold it back in a saving account then pay when you file next year? The reason i ask is because my work is real seasonal. I work real strong for four months then its kind of dead. From Jan to may theres almost hardly any work. I have only made around 6000 dollars this quarter, but with 2200 dollars worth of bills every months i cant save money..From may to oct is when i make all my money..

I had to cash in some Savings Bonds for a Family Emergency, over $2000 worth, and now I do not know if I need to claim them or not. Do they qualify as a gift since they were from my Grandparents or maybe an inheritance? I really do not want to have to pay the IRS if I do not have to.

In Canada, do you still have to do your taxes even if you didn't make anything this past year or didn't make enough to make the first tax bracket? (I'm a student)

I live in Mississippi and I work in Louisiana. All my state taxes are for Louisiana. I recall a couple of years ago that my tax lady said since I did not work in MS and I did not have deductions or anything that I do not have to file for MS. Is this still true? Because when I e-filed with turbo tax, it told me i had to pay MS taxes of $145. Why the heck would I have to pay state taxes for MS when I pay it all year long on all my purchases?

If qualified dividends is taxed at a lower tax bracket (15%), then why don't I add this 15% tax amount to my total tax? IRS does not calculate it that way. Can someone please explain to me how this is calculated.

I had 2 jobs in 2006. The first job I worked at for 49 weeks and my current job I worked 3 weeks. I am claiming 1 on my W4 for both jobs. After entering my first W2 (58k gross), all the tax programs I used say I should get 500 back. After entering my second W2 (4k gross) the programs say I get a 100 refund. I'm still in the same tax bracket (under 75k) and 15% of my check went into Federal taxes. Any ideas what may cause my refund to drop so much?
