As long as your name is on the mortgage you can take the mortgage interest deduction for any interest that you actually paid.

You can file Married Filing Separately as long as you are married, there is no time limit. I know a Catholic couple who have been separated for over 40 years and still file MFS.

If you get a legal separation under a decree of separate maintenance you can start filing as Single. You'll pay lower taxes that way and it's a good option if a formal divorce isn't an option for you for whatever reason.

If your spouse itemizes deductions, you cannot claim the standard deduction. If you can claim the standard deduction, your basic standard deduction is half the amount allowed on a joint return.

If you file separately, only one of you can take the deduction. You must make sure that your spouse does not take the deduction.
