We have been married for all of 2006. I used the maiden name by mistake but the social security number is correct.

The correct answer to your question depends on the means that you filed, that is electronically or paper. The proper way is with your wife's Social Security number and her name as it appears on her Social Security records at the time that you file. If she has not changed her name with the Social Security Administration she should use her former name,

The name used has to match the name on her social security card or the IRS will reject the return. So the question is, has she changed her name on her social security card or is it still her maiden name?

her name for tax purposes is the name on her current and most recent social security card if filed electronically it will bounce and will be rejected if it does not match their records and their records are social security records

If the IRS rejects your return, this can be solved with a phone call. This happened to me when me and my ex were married.

If you are getting a paper check how will you cash it with the wrong name on it?

At the IRS , you are your SSN . .
Your name is superfluous .
If the SSN is right , you are OK .
