I have a regular part time job with the normal tax issues, but I recently accepted a very small freelance writing job as well. I am unsure how to deal with the taxes and social security stuff with this. The job required me to send in a W-9, but I understand this to be only for their records. What is the right way to declare my income for the freelance job, and how do I withhold the right social security etc.? I am completely lost on this, but I want to make sure that I follow all the rules properly. Thanks in advance!

Ok, so my husband and I were married 3 years ago and our tax preparer has filed my husband as single and myself as head of household the last 3 years. Is this completely 1. unbeneficial to us? 2. Going to get us in trouble? 3. How do we fix this so we get the correct thing done?

I went to see the Jackson Hewitt man tonight and he said he did what he was told...not what was best for us and that if we filed an addenda we'd get audited and have to pay money (why that is I don't know, we've always reported all income and had taxes deducted through or employers?? WTF???!!!!! I thought it was better to file jointly? Or am I mistaken??

I am having a bit of a problem. My husband worked for a contractor for a few weeks over the summer and we received a 1099-Misc. for the cash that he was paid. I am trying to do my taxes through H&R Block's website. When I go to where you enter 1099-Misc. information, it has a bunch of questions to answer, it is asking my about owing our own business and what accounting method we used for our business. But we do not or did not own our own business. How do I go about doing this??? How do I answer these things when they don't actually pertain to us?

Hi,
I have a brokerage account with Scottrade and they sent me a composite 1099Div,1099INT which totals all the things across the funds I own. Do I just need to report all this under Scottrade's name or list the individual mutual funds seperately and show the Div and Capital gains.

Thanks

How much can I pay them before I have to get their W-9 info. Is this per person or the total amount for everyone. Say its $500.00. If I paid subcontractor $550.00 and another one $100.00 am I over my amount total $150.00 or just for $50.00 for one subcontractor and under the amount for the other. So the one that is under I don't need his w-9 info yet.

I sold my car this year in a private sale. Originally I thought my cost basis was the original amount I paid for the car when I bought it. A friend of mine told me that since I sold it for more than was left in my financing payments (ie my sell price was greater than what I still owed) it counts as capital gains. So is the cost basis the amount that was left to be paid on the car at the time of sale or the original cost of the car when first purchased?

Legally speaking, not logically speaking, is it legal to be a homeless people and to beg for money like that? And if it is, are they legally supposed report any income and pay taxes on it? I know none of them do it, but are they legally supposed to do it, since you are technically supposed to report any income. Is there a written exception for them?

He alone made $40,000.00 and only $99.00 was paid into federal. He did this last year and I refused to file married filing jointly. I got a small return and he owed more than $3000.00. He again owes that much and is blaming the tax prep place. We are now getting notices from the IRS to Levy. He thinks I should pay for it out of my return. I understand that thought, but it makes me angry that I work just as hard and pay my taxes and he refuses to. To save our home I will but it is very frustrating. I am a third year accounting student. I have learned quite a few tricks on preparing taxes, but I couldn't pull this rabbit out of the hat. Any suggestions???

I'm having my family taxes done through an accountant and one of our college students has only one semester's worth tuition on his 2006 1098t form. If he paid for his Spring 2006 bill in December of 2005, should it have appeared on the 2005 1098t or the 2006 1098t?

I used to work at a gentlemen's club,we have to pay taxes as well.
I asked my friend about it, and he told me NOT to worry about it,
I have not done my taxes for 3 year all together.
I asked another friend of mine, and he told me I should get my taxes done, and my other friend was wrong in what he told me.

I belive that he is right, and I wanna keep my financials together.

If I walked into a H & R Office, would they be able to pull up my records on the computer,or do I have to physically have all the information myself, before I go to the H&R to take care of the taxes?
Should it be enough to bring my ID and Social Security Card?

I heard from the IRS office and Frankfurt and a bureaucratic office here in Hungary that as an American citizen teaching in Hungary for less than two years I am exempt from income taxes. But the school I am teaching at has been withholding tax money out of ignorance of this law and I can't figure out how to go about getting the money (a pretty large percentage) back and how to prevent them from doing it in the future. A lawyer is too expensive, please help me figure out what to do.
