can you claim your child on taxes? Can you take deductions for say school costs or anything?

My sister is on full SSI and so is my nephew due to disabilities. I told her i thought she could claim him because he lives with her therefore she can claim school expenses as a deduction. She doesnt think so- who knows for sure?

I was a student for 5 months during 2006 in Kaplan Educational Center, Toronto. They gave me a receipt for income tax refund and it says that the amount of the tuition paid for the purposes of paragraph 118.5 of the Income Tax Act. My questions are:
1. Where to fill out this amount, because I couldn't see any paragraph like that in ufile?
2. I was enrolled for 5 months, so is that a full time course or a part time course?

In Oct 06 I accepted a job in NJ. However I continued to live in PA for all of 2006 (01/06 - 12/06). Only PA state taxes were withheld from my paycheck. We moved to NJ in 02/07 and I will have to enter my new address on the 1040 and the PA state tax return? Is this OK? Do I also need to file a NJ partial year non-resident tax return?
Thank you for your response.

I have the opportunity to buy into the company I work for. The purchase price will be paid in seven annual payments out of my portion of the proceeds from the business, covered by a promissory note. The annual payment will be almost $150,000.00. Is there any way to avoid, defer, or offset the onerous income tax implications of such an arrangement?

The tax return guidelines state that certain itemized deductions cannot exceed a specified percentage of the Adjusted Gross Income (i.e., 7.5% of medical expenses). Is the deductible amount "zero" if the AGI is negative?

I received misc. non-taxable compensation on my 2006 return for an education reimbursement. I took the actual payment of the tuition (MBA Program, $12,000) as a deduction in 2005. Do I need to amend my 2005 return or can/should I simply declare the reimbursement as taxable on my 2006 return? If so, how/where do I do this on the 1040?

Thanks.

However, my boss states that she doesn't send out 1099 forms until the end of the year (sometime in December of this year). I hope to be gone by then, and working in a teaching job.

My reason for wanting to fill out this form is because she considers me as an indpendent contractor, when I am here 40 hours a week as a secretary in her real estate office.
I believe that is unjust and unfair.

Even though I don't plan to stay at this job beyond the summer, I plan to pay my self employment taxes at the end of the year, when I get my 1099 form from her. So, I won't be paying quarterly. I won't have to pay federal because my husband is not working and my salary is low enough (if I stay here) to cover us with the standard deduction and personal deductions.

So, all I have to pay is my self employment tax, it it is determined I am actually self employed.

My question is if I file this SS8 form, and it's determined I am self employed, will I have to stay paying taxes quarterly?

I filed my state income taxes on the 19th. I also had them do a direct deposit to my checking acount. Approximately how long will it take for the funds to be transfered? I'm tryin to determine what day next week I should expect it to be in my account. If anyone has received their state tax return through direct depositing, please tell me how long it took to go thru.

The charity acknowledges that I raised $10K. I have receipts to show I spent, for example, money to put on a dinner where participants paid $60 a plate. All of that money was donated to the charity. Is this incurred cost tax deductible? Thank you.

Do they go ahead and file NOW?....they owe about $500 (and want to pay it!) from last year but failed to file an extension. Should something be done about 2005 before they file for 2006 tax year?

Last year I received a $115.00 refund from Maryland State taxes but this year I owe over $600.00 and I can’t figure out why I owe so much. The only thing that has changed from last year is that I made $8,000.00 more.

I claim 0 on my checks
I made under $40,000.00
I have no dependents or anything to claim

Does anyone know why I would owe state taxes? I just don't understand why I owe when I claim 0 on my weekly check. I thought the whole point of claiming 0 was so that they would take out more taxes during the year so that you would'nt owe at the end of the year.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks!!

I suspect this continues to be just another "lets get the vote" givaway program initiated by the Democrats. Bush, in order to jump start the economy, gave back some money to the TAXPAYING citizens and was roundly critisized by the Democrats. I think this is another good why only TAXPAYERS should be allowed to VOTE!

I live, work, and am based out of NY. In 2006 I had to work in NJ for 5 weeks through my company. Therefore, I received two W2's, one for NY and one for NJ. The NY one includes the same total income for 2006 in box 1 and in box 16. I know that 100% of my wages are supposed to be reflected in NY instead of by hours worked per a bulletin issued by NYS in '03, so that's not a problem. However, on my NJ W2, the same total income amount is listed in box 1, while the state earnings box 16 reflects the NJ portion. So, for my federal return, do I have to include that NJ W2 as well? My total income earned in 2006 is reflected on the NY W2, so I see no reason to include the NJ one as it reflects the same total income. I will include it when calculating my NJ state return. Is it wrong to not list that W2 on my Federal Return? It just doesn't make sense to include it, as I'd have to enter zeroes for the federal portion....

THANKS
