can you claim your child on taxes? Can you take deductions for say school costs or anything?

My sister is on full SSI and so is my nephew due to disabilities. I told her i thought she could claim him because he lives with her therefore she can claim school expenses as a deduction. She doesnt think so- who knows for sure?

She also gets child support, but nothing else in regards to money she works for.

She has no taxable income, so wouldn't benefit from any deductions or credits for her son. Deductions and child credits can only reduce your tax liability to zero - hers is already there. So she's correct.

If a parent and her child have only SSI as their income, there is no tax due. There are no deductions since there is no taxable income.

No tax return is filed, except for the telephone excise tax refund, Form 1040EZT for a $40 telephone tax rebate.

If their only income is SSI, they have no taxable income and do not need to file tax returns. There's nothing for them to claim against in this case.

The "deductions" claimed would be against any taxable income. In SS there is no taxable income. Earned Income Credit is for "earned" income.
