I'm having my family taxes done through an accountant and one of our college students has only one semester's worth tuition on his 2006 1098t form. If he paid for his Spring 2006 bill in December of 2005, should it have appeared on the 2005 1098t or the 2006 1098t?

If it was paid in 2005, even if it was for the spring 2006 term, it would have properly been shown on the 2005 1098-T.

Yes, it could. In fact, if it was billed in December of 2005, but paid in 2006, it could still have appeared on the 2005 1098T. That happened for my son. The 1098T for 2006 did not include the spring 2006 numbers because the college only showed what was billed in 2006.
