I just make enough money to afford my rent every month at the moment, and and I've had a letter from council tax saying I owe £800! I don't have it! Will they fine me or put me in prison if I don't come up with the cash? I've applied for benefits but I dont have a job that has a set amount of pay so I couldn't answer any of their questions.

We are only using standard deductions & filing short form. My spouse earned $690 providing after-school childcare. How do we account for this money on our tax return?

My friend is on long-term disability. She gets $1500 a month from the company's insurance co. She received a w-2 from the employer stating $16,000 in third-party sick pay and a w-2 from the insurance co. showing $18,000 for the same. If I report both it would show $30,000+ in taxfree income while she actually received only what the Insurance w-2 reflected. Did the employer err in sending a w-2? Can I disregard it and file with just the Insurance w-2? And if I file with both would it affect her bottom line. She also has a dependent child living with her.

I work for a company & get paid hourly for 40 hours of work. Thing is, anything over 40, i get paid with cash at regular wage and it's supposed to be under the table. It may sound like a bad deal, but since it was off the books, an employee could accumulate a decent amount of hours (some guys were working 90 hours) and get paid a much larger check than if you got paid time and a half with restricted hours. Come tax time, my boss hits me with a 1099 along with my W2, and so now I have to report the extra income. I know it's my own fault for getting myself involved in this mess, but is what my boss doing legal? Can I sue for time and a half owed to me? Is there any other action I can take?

I was told by a lawyer, even if you can not be reached because you move, that your wages con NOT be garnished without "in person" notification. I got a letter from my late mom, about a year after there was supoosed to be some court ruling on a credit card debt. The debt was on a $200 maximum balence card. I think when I started seeing on my pay check $73 taken out that it was il-legal, because I personally was never notified of such a court ruling, such a proceedure to garnish my wages. I know I more than paid back what I owed on this $200 maximum credit card. When it first came up on my credit card balence, the company investigated and concluded, it was no identy theft, no credit card fraud. It wasn't me, and I still say I should've never owed any garnishment at all. Was I a victum of garnishment fraude and is this a common practice?

I take care of my wonderful grandson, age 5, five days or more a week. I buy all his clothing, feed him my food, and take him to the doctor when needed, getting his meds, etc. Is there any type tax deduction for this? It really gets costly..........but, I will continue to do it, even if I don't have any tax help with it.

I had a credit card with a $200 maximum balence allowed. In 2 week's time, the company (this was years ago) tried to say my balence was $1200, then $1500, then $1800, then $2100. I argued with thier customer service that it was not me, and how could a $200 balence go so high in 2 or 3 weeks? Then after a few years after thinking I paid off the over $200 balence, I was working at a place, and someone started taking $73 per paycheck out of my wages. I was never notified by the credit card company, nor my employer's payroll department. This caused me financial ruins. I hardly can pay my bills now, but I hope maybe I'll get a descent tax refund. Do garnishment people steal our identities? It's funny how the W-2 form doesn't list over $1000 that I paid out in garnishments. Will I owe because about $1000 was garnished, but not taxed or anything? It's still $1000 I made.

My wife worked just one day in the state of Colorado as a substitute teacher before we got married and she moved to my home state of Georgia. She still received a W2 but only for some ridiculous $87 in wages. I need to know if I have to now spend the $29.95 on something like Turbotax to report to this state or if there is some minimum that applies before being required to do so. Please include your source and experience. Thank you!!
