I moved cross-country this year to attend graduate school full time. I am also employed by the university half time as a condition of my financial support (I receive a w-2). Can I deduct moving expenses from my income on form 1040?

No, you must be working full-time to take the Moving Expense Deduction.

You must also meet the time test by working full-time at the new job for at least 39 weeks in the 12 months immediately following the move.

A half-time job does not qualify for the moving expense deduction.

To qualify for the moving expense deduction, you must work full-time for 39 weeks during the first year after the move.
