I'm looking for a very basic new business to start up. I have many friends interested and willing to help. We are all males 20-22 years old and in very good shape. So I am leaning towards lawn care, movers, new construction clean up, etc... Basically looking to sell a service that involves more labor than actual investment.

I have to open a pretend business for a class... selling/ renting dvd's, movies, cd's, and video games. There is also beverages such as alcohol you can buy and pizza. I will not be serving alcohol... only selling, but will sell fresh food, packaged food, and other beverages. So, what licenses will I need, and if you can, list the prices.

Thanks for looking.

Smokers have serious health issues. This leads to higher absenteeism and higher costs for their health insurance. Being addicted, they need their frequent smoke breaks, which burdens other employees who have to cover for them. Many smokers stink, even when they are not smoking, because the smoke odor gets into their hair, clothes and bodies, so they are not nice to be around.

As addicts, smokers have lost control over a part of their lives. Would you hire an out-of-control alcoholic? Or some heroin junkie who needs to shoot up every few hours? I didn't think so.

Some big employers will no longer hire smokers. The World Health Organization comes to mind. If a smoker is too weak-willed to get clean from his habit, isn't that a serious personality defect? Nicotine is controlling his life. The smoker is a loser.

So if I owned a business I would not hire a smoker. What about you?

Oh yes, they will sometimes say their smoking is a "right". FACT: It is a habit, not a right.

I am looking into getting into an export business from overseas, with my base being in California. My questions:

1. Do you need a reseller's permit if the goods you purchase are made overseas? In other words, I wouldn't be buying the goods from a wholesale party in the USA.
2. If the business is located outside of the USA and the items are shipped from outside the USA, would I still have to gather sales tax? All of the transactions with customers would be coming from another country.

Most (if not all) of the transactions would be done via the internet (eBay, etc.) As I want to make the business legal, I just want to make sure I am doing the right things (the CA site wasn't overly clear; I understand having to file for a Business Tax License in my area as a sole proprietor).

Thanks!
