Small Business - January 2007

I do computer work for friends and family. I get paid most of the time. Last year I made about 300.00. I know thats not much, but I would like to start a Corporation because I hear that there are many tax advantages to it.

I would also like to start advertising my services. I am in the state of NY. I have a job (running my bosses business for him - and I do a very good job of it).

I also own part of an S corp (My boss gave me 10 percent of the shares), and at the end of the year I get a 10% what we made for the year.

What kind of corporation do you think would be best for me? I hear an S corp is the best. Is that true?

All unleashed dogs will attack and frighten sheep on land with public acess under the right to roam. This is causing a major problem on the downs because the cattle destroy the habitat. But the public will not control their dogs and the farmer cannot be there all the time to shoot the dogs down. The Russian sheep guard dogs are much too dangerous. Can a Lllama protect against a three pronged attack by a couple of Terriers and a German Shepherd Dog?

How can I research whether another business exists with the same name that I want to use, and if one does, but is in a different state than I am in, does it matter? Example: If I want to name my business "John Doe's Business" and I live in Louisiana, and there is a "John Doe's Business" in Florida, would that make any difference? I just need some input and guidance. Thanks!

My business was contracted to build a machine for a company in Pennsylvania at a cost of $32,500 our contract states NO due date and the build is taking longer than expected. The purchasing company has out of the blue decided not to do business with us and they have had their check refunded by their bank. This has put a block on our account and a negative balance of $-28,500 as the funds were already distributed among parts and labor. The company will not return our calls and we are not sure what direction to take. Is this legal and if not what should we do! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Let's face it! There are a lot of dishonest people out there. You can send out a perfectly good item, and have it returned to you all broken up, with the buyer complaining that it didn't work.
You can also have someone claim they never even got the item, or that it wasn't as described, then try to get their money back. You know you're honest, but what about them? How can you guarantee you won't get cheated? No web links, please--just good answers.

Considering how eBay has become flooded with competition. I don't hear too much from quiet ol' Amazon. Could something be brewing up over there?

I'm thinking of starting an Internet aucion site business and am seriously considering Amazon over eBay. What do you think?
