I made some bad decisions when I was younger regarding credit cards and didn't really know what I was doing and almost $9,000.00 later and a few years later it's still messed me up on a lot of things. I was told by a friend that I should just get a school loan, which is not based on credit. like a stafford or something and pay it off. And as long as I'm still going to school then it's fine, I'd just have to pay out of pocket for school. Has anyone else done this before or know a better way? I've tried debt consolidation and management groups which have not really been helpful. So I was thinking this would be much better because it's a low interest rate and I would be repairing my credit at the same time.
Currently undergraduate - doing community college. (transferring later)

I know this can be done. I've done it before. But I forgot where? Does anyone know? Thanks. Oh and my taxes are really pretty simple still at this point in my life. I do get a return that's worth receiving but not worth spending money on someone to prepare my taxes. Thanks again!

This month a few funds in my portfolio lost a significant percentage of their value in just one day (for instance reacx). The reason supposedly was a cap gain or cap loss. Could anyone explain me, what that means? Are those gains or losses announced ahead of time, and would it be better to sell ahead of time?

My house is now worth substantially more than it was when I purchased it a few years ago. At the time of purchase, I had the house insured for the appraised value. Now it is worth tens of thousands more. I'm concerned that I would lose all of this equity if there was a disaster like fire that destroyed the building. Is it wise to increase the amount of coverage now and if so, is it usually neccessary to have another appraisal done or do insurance companies simply allow a homeowner to get coverage in any amount they desire?

I'm under the impression that if I insure a package at the post office for $500.00 and that package is lost, I will receive $500.00 regardless of it's value. I paid the fee for that amount of insurance.

I am in FL. I have lived here for a year and a half. The carpet was not new when I moved in, but it is really pretty bad now thanks to it being cheap and light colored. A friend told me her brother was a landlord here and if a tenant live in a place more than a year, the damages to carpet were considered wear and tear. Considering they charged me 2 mths. rent with a 60 day notice, is that not enough to get my apartment ready for their "waiting list"? I am sure they will have somebody in here by the end of Jan even though I have to pay rent through Feb already!

Since I'm using my company insurance benefits on my partner, I wonder if I can claim her as my dependent to avoid some 30+% of some 3+K 'worth of insurance'?
what if her father already calims her as a 'dependent', while she's actually a college student on scholarships/loans/grants?

Or put it the other way
say my annnual income is 80k while her dad is less than half of that. Would it be more beneficial for me to claim her as a dependent? or for her dad?

I live in California, by the way.

Thanks
-Victor

According to our handbook, employees are to have one 30 minute lunch for every 6 hours of work as well as two 15 minute break periods before and after.

Most of the time workload prevents me from taking either of the 15 minute breaks during their normal times. So to comphensate, I punch out for 15 minutes for lunch and take a 10-15 minute break while on the clock. It has come to my attention, that my manager is voiding my punches and punching me out for the whole 30 minutes. She has told a coworker of hers when approached that I was "cheating" to get overtime.
So, my question is: Is it legal for a manager to override an employee's punches and change them to reduce the amount of OT being paid out?
