Salaries vary from $20,000 to $100,000+. In general, the people at the bottom of the pay scale tend to quit the profession and move on. The people at the top of the pay scale stay, and the ones in the middle get promoted to management where they also earn $100,000+. Overall, average performers seem to make in the range $30,000 - $50,000.

The location does not matter. There is no set wage or salary. Salesman might be given a draw, which is a loan against future sales, but this should not be confused with wages. 100% of their income comes from the profit from selling vehicles and the bonuses from meeting sales quotas.

Compensation is a tricky thing that each dealership keeps secret both from the salesmen and the competition. In general, if the dealership purchased a car for $5000 and the salesman sold it for $10,000, he or she could expect to pocket about $4250. The rest of the profit ($750) would be split amongst the sales managers and the dealership owner. This is generally the sales compensation for used car salesmen.

New car salesmen can earn portions of financing, sales bonuses, and other stuff. If both new and used car salesmen focus on moving cars at a profit, then the compensation usually works out in their favor.

While I can appreciate your gratitude for her, remember she wasn't doing this out of the goodness of her heart, she was making money off of you, probably some pretty good money at that. However if you do want to show your appreciation, I think that the gift charge is an excellent choice, if rather extravagant. A more appropriate gift would be a pizza, lunch, something along those lines. Also be aware that some car dealers will read mail addressed to delivered to the dealership addressed to a sales person, so I would deliver it in person.

All car sales have different commission, hourly wages, bonuses, and salaries. It ranges.

You have to know your product, be able to talk to strangers, hold a conversation, and have really good closing skills. Or, you're just not going to make it in auto sales. You have to be a hardcore sales person. I used to do it and you can't let your emotions/feelings get to you.

For example: An older couple walks in and you know they're on SS and has a limited amount of money in the bank. You're going to have to rip them off big time even though you know it's the wrong thing to do. That's why it's hard for people to sell things to others.

car sales people are STRICTLY commission. They are the lowest of the low and will steal cars right from under you to fatten their wallets and not give a damn about you. I want to say the average is 10% a car. Thats why they want to sell 20-30 cars a month. I will NEVER work for a car dealership again damn thieves. Stay away from commission only jobs,

They get something like minimum wage, and a commission on every car they sell. The bulk of their money comes from commission.

Usually minimum wage plus commission. If you don't sell cars, you don't make much.
