Well it obviously depends on the job. Some universities have a limit on the number of hours you should work - if you work more than you study then you are counted as a part-time student and that means you will not be exempt from council tax, for example. So be careful. The university I was at suggested that students work no more than 12 hours per week.

As to what kind of job, usually students work in pubs/bars/restaurants/ shops/ factories etc. These are good for extra holiday work - Christmas/ Easter etc.

The minimum wage is £5.05 per hour, so, if you worked 10 hours a week you would earn £50.50 before tax. Many jobs have a better hourly rate.

You are allowed to earn £4200 per year (it may be a little more) before you have to pay tax - although you often have to pay tax and then claim it back from the Inland Revenue. Anyone who disputes this - I have always paid some tax on any wage packet! No one is exempt from tax. You will also have to pay National Insurance contributions but the amount varies according to which bracket you are in. I don't know whether the NI applies to overseas students though.

Temping is also a good idea - sign up to an agency - and you earn more per hour. Obviously the work is not regular like shift work in a pub or factory.
Hope that helps.

Depends on the company since different companies offer different hourly wages. For part-time work, you will be working 30 hours or less a week. So you can take the hourly rate and times is by 30 and that will be the max amount you'll receive (before taxes are taken out.)

General shop/bar work in the UK will probably pay around £6 an hour depending on where about you work, London will be higher, up North possibly lower.
