What are the ins and outs? I am convinced that we are a large enough organization to bring one in and that at this point, it is the only way to reign in management. I am unable to take the vacation time and sick-time that is gauranteed me in the employee handbook for one. One fear I have is that the employees don't care enough about their positions to endeavor into this challenge. I feel that I could get some job security through a union. Can I be fired for trying to start a union?

This is in San Francisco. Another problem is that there are 3 locations that make up our organization and I have some but not a lot of communication with the employees at them, certainly not employees I can trust.

I have been working in retail but cannot take anymore of the industry. I am looking for another type of job but have no idea what to go into. I have searched for jobs in my local area but have found nothing but 'must have experience' jobs. How can I get experience if no one gives me a chance? I am seriously thinking of becoming self employed in something but that would be a last resort.
I found that I cannot work full time in a computer related job as I get very ill being in front of a screen for hours on end, so it would have to be only part time despite my love of working with computers.
I enjoy being creative, computers (esp. web related things) and I am independent. What job area do you think I should go for?

I began working at a fine dining restaurant approximately 2 weeks ago...gradually things would change as time went on...first, the original manager who hired me left after a couple of days. Another manager comes in to fill in form NYC, seems okay..tells me did they tell you that you will be a back waiter for the first week? I said no, but thought what the heck, I'll make some money. So, I work a double on a Friday, bust my rear end, MGR from NYC says you worked hard..but I don't get tipped? Then I learn you must work 3 days before you get tipped..hmmmm, I had allready done that. Then, I go in to work today, some 2 weeks hence..and the new GM, said let's talk...mind you, I hadn't worked wtih him yet...only saw him observer a few days back..looking bored...and looked at me funning when I said hello. He basically proceeds to tell me that I don't fit in here....Well, yes I guess I don't, because I'm intellegent, clean cut, well groomed, and speak English..Totally unfair..any recorse?

I am new to filing as an independant contractor. I read I will need to file quarterly but also saw this on a site:

Who Must Pay Estimated Tax

If you had a tax liability for 2005, you may have to pay estimated tax for 2006.

General Rule
You must pay estimated tax for 2006 if both of the following apply.

You expect to owe at least $1000 in tax for 2006 after subtracting your withholding and credits.
You expect your withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of;
90% of the tax to be shown on your 2006 tax return, or
100% of the tax shown on your 2005 tax return. Your 2005 tax return must cover all 12 months.

Now does this mean that if I am able to qualify for the eic that I will not have to pay quarterly because I would be owing less than $1000 in taxes? Sorry if this is a dumb question, just so lost on how to file as an independent contractor. Hope all this makes some sort of sense.

I have been in customize sports apparel business for 24 years now trying to build a company in the Philippines that can evolve into such great companies like Adidas and Nike. With a very modest beginning, we are doing almost a million dollars annually but this past five years we have been on the red. I'm thinking of giving up because I can't seem to form a management team to move the company forward to next level. My key personnel, which I've trained for so many years, I realized now seemed incapable of meeting the call of challenge -- the opportunities that have come and passed away. If not for these people I care and the many workers depending on the company, I would have closed five years ago. I'm losing confidence to regroup and form the management team needed to carry on with our recovery plan. I've been getting a lot of advises and I just thought of asking from yahoo! Answers community what else can be done.
