I am specifically interested in companies that manufacture illuminated indicator pannels and switches for portable electronic equipment. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

I don't know what your interest has to do with Austin being a tech hub, but . . .

The reason it is such a tech center is The University of Texas at Austin is a wonderful source of engineers, and the workforce, on average, has an above median level of education. This has attracted companies like Freescale Semiconductor (formerly Motorola), Advanced Micro Devices, Samsung, Dell Computer (started in Austin, now in nearby Round Rock) and a host of supporting vendors like Applied Materials, etc. The city actively courts these companies with tax breaks. Other companies with a presence in Austin are Intel and Sun Microsystems.

Generally, when you say technology the thing that comes to mind is electronics, but the pharmaceutical giant, Abbott Labs is also in Austin.

It was not a tech hub until few years ago when the city changed some of its rules how to tax companties and how to stimulate them. Now Austin is big and it will get a bigger technology hub.
