In NY State, gas runs about $2.80 USD a gallon or .68 USD a litre.
Converting that to GBP it works out to be .37 GBP and in Euros it would be .54 EUR per litre.
An American gallon is smaller than your gallon...a U.S. gallon is about 3.8 liters, an Imperial gallon is about 4.6 liters (or 20% more). So when comparing them, you also have to adjust for that.

The gas may be higher in other countries as is the size of the cars are much smaller and more fuel efficient.
Always remember, much of the highway money for an infrastructure comes from the sale of gasoline. Take away the taxes, the add on costs of projects and special programs that are included in the cost of gasoline and I wonder what is the real cost of gasoline in those countries...?
I don't believe its as simple as saying, the cost of gas is cheaper. I wonder what goes into those costs...?

what the other answer says is almost correct. I have lived in the UK and USA. In the UK a gallon of fuel is about the equal when converted into dollars of about 9 dollars a gallon. In Spain where i currently live it is about 5 dollars. The Uk has very high tases imposed by the governemnt on what it considers LUXURY good od which gas/petrrol is one.

you have to convert american dollars into pounds which is what the UK uses..
Since american money has a higher value than most countries including UK I would imagine that it is more expensive there than it is here in the states.
It's just like it is here in the states.. how some states and some towns in the same state have a different value price of gas, like say your in Indianapolis it could be $3 a gal there, but if you travel NW to Layfette it will only be $2.15 gal.
It depends on the environment and the economy. But since its another country you have to convert our dollar amounts into their pounds.. which their pounds = less than our dollar.
Not that difficult.

its not 4x higher but more expensive. with the monetary pound to dollar people get really confused. Its about 4 and some change a gallon in US dollars. They have smaller cars and drive shorter distances generally.

About 80% of the price of gas in the UK is tax. It is $1.65 a litre (about $7.50 a gallon).
It is amongst the highest prices in Europe.
