What are the ins and outs? I am convinced that we are a large enough organization to bring one in and that at this point, it is the only way to reign in management. I am unable to take the vacation time and sick-time that is gauranteed me in the employee handbook for one. One fear I have is that the employees don't care enough about their positions to endeavor into this challenge. I feel that I could get some job security through a union. Can I be fired for trying to start a union?

This is in San Francisco. Another problem is that there are 3 locations that make up our organization and I have some but not a lot of communication with the employees at them, certainly not employees I can trust.

in this country we have "Employment at Will" which basically means that an employer can fire you at any time for pretty much any reason whether it is fair or not...and the courts will generally not intervene to protect the ex-employee from allegedly unfair treatment by the employer. exceptions to this are in cases where discrimination because of race, gender, religion, age etc....can be proven...I urge you and all Americans to contact their legislators and push for statutes that will end at-will employment.
