Business & Finance - 20 August 2006

Recently there have been a lot of changes going on at work. One of them being, that another completely separate dept. has demanded that I spend half of my day working in their dept. They have even transfered equip. over for me. Buy doing so, I will have to neglect certain duties for my own dept. as well as spend a lot of effort trying to keep what I'm doing for each dept. in order. This change comes without much explaination, without a raise and I won't even have an office to use, like i do in my current position. My own manager is confused as well, but is the type that likes everyone to be happy, and is trying to be accomodationg to them as well. I've discussed my concerns which she shares, but doesn't seem to have much power to control. Do I have a right to say no, I want to stay where i'm at? Should i go to HR? Please help if you have any advice, I'm young and not very experience with the professional world yet.

I am 25 years old. One year on my resume, as an internal auditor, with heavy international travel, and a Masters in Accountancy. I hate accounting-I pursued my degree to get some money sense. I would like to run my own show one day. I took a job inland. When I started working, I planned on working for a year or two and then travelling. I have shelved the travel until I am financially independent, plus the fact that I have been to 6 countries in the last year for work. I still really want to go to Hawaii to surf. I know I am young enough, and in shape to go surf the big waves and fear that too much more time away from the water will take a serious toll on my surfing. I live in a growing metropolitan area, with a great potential to invest in real estate. I know the area will still be growing in a year.I am caught between surfing and starting to invest in real estate. I maxxed my Roth for the year. I would work almost any job to keep my current money. I have a free couch to stay on in HI.

I started a new job a month ago. I was so happy because I finally got decent pay and health insurance. Unfortunately, this was too good to be true. One of my coworkers smokes in the office. I have asthma and am allergic to cigarette smoke. Everytime she lights one up, I start smothering. I told my boss in person about my health condition and all he said he'd do is put up automatic door closers on the doors around her (she smokes in the doorway of the building so she can stay by the phone). Well, about 2 or 3 weeks went by, and he'd still not put anything up. I decided to email him and tell him again. I asked him if he could ban smoking indoors completely. Well, finally he decides to put those automatic door closers on there. But guess what, she props her door open! It's terrible!

Anyway, have any of you dealt with smokers at work. How do you get someone to stop. The bad thing is, my boss is a smoker too! So he doesn't care! If they don't stop, I'm going to have to find another job!

I always find my Co- workers whispering and chatting quietly when I am on my way back from lunch or the ladies room. What should I do? I like my job don't get me wrong but I hate when people talk about me. As many people that don't pay taxes, I think it would benefit the economy because if you have a higher fixed tax on goods then everyone would have to pay. This would let us retrieve money from all the people dodging taxes, paying under the table, and illegals working in the country. Let's face everyone has to eat and buy clothes. So, we would actually benefit because there would be no way out of paying taxes. Plus thought of making 50K a year and taking home 50k would promote more spending and boost our economy because our economy is driven by consumer spending. Just a thought!
