By my obersvation, many home based jobs are started by working in the office. When an employer determines that the sense of urgency and understanding of the job warrants a home job, a negotiation can be done. The employee works in their home and ties to the corporate network and takes phone calls, just as if they are in the office. It saves the company money by less office space and cost and usually gets a bit more work out of the employee. The employee gets the ability to do some child or adult care.
But the secret to this arrangement is that you have to work and produce, which is somethiing you prove.
About the only home job I have seen without on-the-site proof of ability is word processing, telemarketing and call center type stuff. Web site management and journalism is another.
I have a home office after many years, but prefer the office to be able to communicate over the water cooler with my peers. The company tends to forget me because I am not in sight and like the candidate to be dismissed if such a downturn happens.
