I am in Florida - to get a job here -- you almost HAVE to go through a temp-to-hire/staffing agency. It's horrible. I have this job by dropping a resume off and they hired me after an interview and THEN sent me to sign up with their staffing agency. I have to be with them for 8 weeks - every employee here had to do the same thing. Prev. employer told me they do this now so they don't have to pay out big ads in the paper and almost every industry is this way. Is it that way where you are? Why can't you just go try to get a job and get hired at that job? You sometimes have to wait a LONG period of time before any benefits kick in this way and your check comes from the agency - not the employer.

What are basic startup costs? Is this worth the trouble?
