There are many ways to get to a manager position. Some get there by deliberate action, others by pure accident or luck.

If you belong to an organization and want to move up, find out what are the expected competencies of a manager. There may be formal documents stating these required competencies or skills. If nothing is formally written, observe what are common qualities of the current managers or simply ask your boss, a senior manager or human resources about what is expected to get to a managerial position. What developmental opportunities are present to be able to sharpen those skills?

Then draw up a development plan that will help you get the position. Realistically though, even if you are ready to assume the position, if there's no vacancy at the top, you may have to wait a little longer. There are very few positions at the top. You've got to be exceptional to get ahead of the rest.

Of course, some will say the easiest (?) way to go up without all the extra trouble is to simply be the kind of person that will stand out because you not only meet your goals but exceed them, consistently! Couple this with great people skills and you should be at the top of management's list of next to be promoted people.

To be a successful manager at the executive level, you must possess the following five attributes:
1. Have an MBA or better.
2. Be presentable and be able to present.
3. Must be politically savy.
4. Must be a very good liar.
5. Cannot be thin skinned.

If you are lacking one of these five qualities, then forget about a career in executive managment. You'll only be miserable and probably fail.

Well, then look for a job you can use all your skills - probably best in a similar kind of business as the one you have experienced already.
