If a person can be Overwhelmed, then how come a less enthusiastic person can't just be whelmed?

i am a deep believer in God but i believe that prayer is for spiritual goals than getting answers to mundane problems like cure my cancer or pay my credit card debts or make me pass with a B in this math exam please kind of prayers .
however as i am growing older ( i am 37 years and 4 months ) i am getting the feeling that when the exuberance and optimism of youth fade away and we have rubbed our idealistic shins on the rough concrete of reality we need some support some hope that things will be better . that the situation will be saved ; that as long as i have good intentions God is watching over me and that he is a benevolent God ...
so should i change my tack about God and start praying to him to answer my prayers as long as i promise the goodness of my soul shall always grow stronger till i die ?
opinion please ... i am feeling confused .( i am not a Christian or i could ask my pastor for help ; and anyone of any religious denomination is free to answer candidly )

I'm faced with 2 confusing choices in life. don't know which one I should be going after. I keep asking help from my subconscious by don't get it. they say when you are really ready for something the universe will rush to your help, but it don't happen in my case. I really need the answer.

My Love for You

When I ‘am with you all I want to do is stare deep into your gorgeous eyes.
I want to surprise you everyday and put flowers on your bed.
I never want to hurt you or let you feel a hint of sadness.
The way I love you feels like an addiction that I can’t be cured of.
The second I see you my spirits lift to great heights.
Your voice is that of an Angel’s making me tremble.
It feels like you were a messenger of GOD to come and save me and bring me happiness.
My love for you goes beyond words.
No great poet of this age or any age can bring it to words.
The world stops spinning and even time itself stops for you and only you.
Our love is enough to make other people jealous but yet we do not flaunt it.
We keep it to ourselves and cherish it and hopefully with fate we will cherish it,
