It depends on your concept of sex because in reality there is nothing that isn't sexual, all of life is sexual, all phenomena is held together in sexual forces. Sex in my opinion is the meeting and ~oneness~ of opposite polarities, male/female, positive/negative, active/reflective ~ all of life follows this pattern, be it fields, be it on the subatomic level, or be it with the human or animals of this world. This patten is divine and permeates all things. For instance our composition is sex on many levels, as of course we came from the union of two polarities, we are a 3 fold nature; physical (feminine), spiritual (masculine), and mental (union or third force).
Sex is life. I am not saying that massive sex with a lot of partners is spiritual, no way. But sex in how I define it is life. Sex between a man and a female a lot more is happening then flesh touch, there is an exchange of energy and a whole movement of it, the male gives and the female receives and raises it up to a higher vibration and gives it back to the male which rears him up more spiritually and they both can grow by this process, in deed on another level the minds become one and they can experience a greater degree of reality, even push into the greater realm of being. But this is more so in a spiritual marriage where they are both spiritual and growing with one another towards a spiritual ideal. The male provides and the female nurtures in regards to energy.

Many Indian Gurus like Acharya Rajneesh ( Ossho) and Mahesh Yogi believe that one can find spiritual path through sexual liberation.
Rajneesh(Ossho) has written a book in Hindi called " Sambhog se Samadhi ki aur" in English it is " From Sex to Superconsciousness"
Read it, it makes an intersting reading and a very different point of view.

Only that which is for a lasting union is eternal and Spiritual in nature. There are many appearances of this, from child birth, to what's learned by the couple, of intimacy of soul.

They are radically different concepts. The boredom person will use sex as a distraction. The lonely person will use sex as a distraction. The person fearful of being alone will use sex to abate the fear. This is quite different from any spiritual enlightenment. Being driven by fear is rather rudimentary. Most animals do this already.
People who seek spirituality have an inner journey rather than the external journey of sex and pleasures of the senses.
