If a person can be Overwhelmed, then how come a less enthusiastic person can't just be whelmed?

Hey...That's a good one! --- Actually they CAN be...if they are in a boat that's flipped over by a wave. Check out this link to the definition.

This more of a specifically linguistic question as opposed to a philosophical question (though many philosophical questions require intense linguistic scrutiny). Probably at one point in English history there was a whelmed that is no longer in use?

Reminds me of a quote from Wodehouse.

"I'm not disgruntled, but I'm not entirely gruntled either"

Overwhelmed is misleading. Anyone is overwhelmed is actually avoiding the issue that their anxiety is overwhelming.

Although, I was underwhelmed with the question and my response.
