Do you believe in causation, that everything has a cause? You must, something cannot happen for no reason... our thoughts and actions don't happen for no apparent reason or cause they must happen because they were caused to, we are not immune to natural causes or forces interacting. If you killed my family, that could cause me to kill you via an angry and vicious and vengeful state of mind, or i could choose not to but i would have to be caused not to... ie... i was christian and believed in forgiveness strongly, i could be CAUSED to re-concider my actions. If you want to say I'm talking crap, it could be because you don't understand, many people will. Free will is an illusion.. in my opinion.

The bible is the word of GOD. In it we can find answers to everyday questions in our lives. We find comfort, solace and inspiration. So what is your fave verse? How do you relate to it?

Step out of the box. Do you like yourself?

In her acceptance speech, she said, "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award," but "no one had less to do with this award than Jesus." She then went on to say, "This award is my God now!" When the Emmy Awards air on Sept. 15, her remarks will be censored. What are your opinions on this? Is it fair or not?

The person in charge of a group of us is a black female. First, she is failing to remain professional in that she says too much and is unfair (gives certain members preference over other members of another race).
Some of her comments have been:
1. "Just because they say you are 'good' doesn't mean they'll hire you" to one member who has been praised by a consulting group and says to another member, "I'll try to get you into that consulting group when you finish this round". In other words, she is openly praising and supporting one member when the other member was not given the same support or praise.
2. " I can't go by what others praise about you. I have to see for myself"--when this professional field we're in revolved around trust .
2. "Who is she? She doesn't know who she is?!"---3 times over the course of meetings, when referring to a person of another race who has decided to go with her ethnic name.
3. She threatens us with, "You need my reference, don't you?"

a situation as follows:

"If the alien spaceship landed, there should be a large circular depression in the field. There is a large circular depression in the field. So the alien spaceship must have landed."

I have figured, that it is an INVALID argument and must figure if it falls under modus ponens or modus tollens.

* Modus ponens states that if A (the antecedent) is true, then B (the consequent) is necessarily true.
But if A is false, that tells us nothing about B (except that if B happens to be true, it is for some reason other than A).
* Modus tollens states that if B (the consequent) is false, then A (the antecedent) is necessarily false.
But if B is true, that tells us nothing about A (because there might well be other causes of B).

I know that A (the antecedent) is false for the reason that the aliens themselves create a fallacy (correct me if I am wrong though) and that B could of been caused by something else than the alien.

thanks...

When I think of how big is Universe, I do not get any answer. There is no limit to Universe. It depends on our imagination how big we can think of it. Similarly how small it could be.

Which proves that it is only our imagination and not reality. The whole universe is a manifested dream which lives in our thought only. Are we imagining ourselves also. Could be possible that this is another dream and when I actually wake up I am in a new world. Has anybody seen his birth. Has anybody seen his death. No. May be we do not die , and are not born. This is crazy. Think about the limits of universe . Does it make sense. Share your thoughts.

I'm feeling as if I'm flagging in life recently.

Anyone got any motivating quotes, or ones which are honest about the limitations of life?

I think Plutarch originally mentioned this paradox:

A ship said to have been Theseus' was preserved in the harbor of Athens for centuries as a memorial. Periodically parts of the ship would need to be replaced, and ultimately over time every single piece of the original ship had been replaced. The question then arose, is it still Theseus' ship?

The issue can be highlighted by imagining that when they were replacing the parts, the pieces of the original ship were collected and saved, and then put together to form another ship of identical design. Which one now is Theseus' ship?

Buddhist philosophy has a similar story about a chariot (King Milinda's). For the Buddhists the conclusion is that there is really "no such thing" as a chariot. It's all just parts arranged in a certain pattern -- in effect it's more of an event than a substance -- it's only as a matter of convenience that we designate such a pattern/ event as a "chariot." There's really "no chariot."

Your perspective?

Just to establish who I am, I would like to let you all know that I am an atheist. However, I am very pro-faith. So here is my question:

Why is it that the people on this site (whether you believe in god or not) feel the need to poke at other people's beliefs? Could you not just accept that the person has different beliefs than you and move on?

If faith in god helps somebody get through their day, why do you feel the need to try and take that away from someone?

And the same for the people that believe in god who feel the need to try and convert every atheist into a christian!

Can we not just all get along?
