I believe the self is the filter through which we interpret all we "see".
I guess that makes never becoming truly aware of the machinations of the self kinda like dying in the Matrix (movie)...never knowing all the things you thought were real, was just an ego-generated (as opposed to a computer-generated) dream world.

As a young child self awareness isn't necessary. They can be ecstatically happy and enjoy their life. Most people don’t develop much self awareness and they function fine in their life.
HOWEVER, if you want to be happy later in life, then it is the only chance you have. It is the basis for wisdom, and understanding in a world of chaos.

no matter how self aware you think you are.. if you are looking at yourself everyday which you dont.. you'll realise things u never saw before.. try taking a video of recording your voice and play it back... its as if someone else is talking..

well... I've always thought.. if you're not self-aware, you're insane?!
I'm kinda obsessive with it, sometimes i'll over analyse little conversations I've had, things I've done. etc. I know.. its not normal..I'm working on it...

awareness is equivalent to knowledge and god said in geeta "as the fire turns wood to ashes so does the fire of knowledge turns your actions and it's fruit to ashes ... liberating your soul"
