If I work at "Target" and my manager gives me a canvas and paint because he thinks I have talent, I'm not going to give it to him just because he bought the stuff for me.

This question has a straightforward answer...

The art belongs to the artist, with credit only where credit is due. If the canvas and paint were a gift, than no credit is due, but if the supplier has supported the artist for many years, then the artist should give credit to him for basically supplying his career, but not the masterpiece.

The idea and arrangment belongs to the artist, because it came out of his head, and he did the work. However, the paint and canvas belong to you.

With no pre-existing contract, to the employer. Purchasing supplies does not entitle one to another's intellectual property and skills.

If I give you a pen and you write a bestseller, do I own the work?

Although, skill and talent are great ways to barter. Many artists in history traded their talent. Intellectuals were housed, clothed and fed for their mental prowess.

This sounds like a 'partron' scenario.

The artists never loses rights to his art, and there should be a money deal involved with the dealer to the artist's satisfaction! Otherwise, it is EXPLOITATION!!!
