A materialist believes that there is nothing beyond the physical world. Our "minds" are just an illusion, it really all reduces to particles and energy. Okay, so how can you teach a blind man to understand color?

If a man were born blind, how could he understand color? What if you explained to him what light was, and all of its wavelengths and frequencies? That's not color. What if you explained to him all of the biochemical reactions that go on in his brain when he sees color, or thinks of color? Suppose that he understood everything about how the eye works and how the brain processes information about color? Does he understand color?

A materialist would be forced to say "yes", because the materialist believes that color is nothing more than brain chemistry. From the materialist's own definition of the world, the blind man understands color as well as any man with sight. But that isn't quite right, is it? We know that a blind man can never truly understand color.

Sexual essentialism is an idea that sex is a natural force based on our biology. Some would say them men are "visually sexual" while others say that women are inclined to such natural instincts as motherhood. To disagree with sexual essentialism is to believe that culture and surroundings form human sexuality. It is a classic nature V nurture argument. Give me your thoughts on sexual essentialism as an absolute.

Why is it that some people believe that a person can only be moral if they are religious as well? What is your opinion on the subject? Do you think that morality is a product of, and hinges solely on, faith. Or do you feel that it is seperate and independent of it? What about the idea that humans are inherently moral? Do you think that we are born with it?

Yesterday, I had a very long conversation with my friend about culture and instinct. My friend claimed that they are two different things, while I on the other hand, claimed that culture and instinct are pretty much the same. I gave an example of the following...

Say someone is invading your land, and you find that defending it helps block the invaders, and so your outcome would be you preserving your land, right? Well, doesn't this become culture as well? Culture, to me, IS instinct, and instinct IS culture.

What do you think? Is there a fine line between instinct and culture, does it depend, or are they both the same exact thing? Elaborate.

Ok bhuddists think life is an illusion.... but this is supported mathematically our mass compared to the mass of the universe is well its small so small a number in fact any mathematician would round it to zero.

So if we dont have a mass then what are we? Are we simply figments of someone elses imagination that doesn't exist?

If someone (who didn't exist) chopped a tree down (that didnt exist) in a forest (that didnt exist) with nobody (that didnt exist) around to hear it would it make a non existent sound?

Christians - Jews- and Muslims contend God is a person. After all he has a name, he has a will, a plan, christians even celebrate his birthday. I believe the correct term is Anthrophoism applying human characteristics to God. This is ridiculos to say the least, he might as well be your next door neighboor. Which brings me back to my question, when Christians say I believe in God and Athesist say I dont are they actually arguing the existence of a being? Or their idea of the existence of a supernatural being? I believe in the ALL just in case your where wondering.

The reason I ask is because Philosophy should be the proposal of ideas and theory, w/no ultimate judgement, only an open forum for consideration.
Am I correct in this?
