Joan: Great book! Schindler would kind of be different, though: How does an ammoral man develop a moral code in an immoral world?
What about this:
How does a moral man maintain his moral code in an immoral world, when he knows he will never experience the benefits of doing the right thing? This is in response to the guy who said that eventually good works will be rewarded.
Oh, and women, too. :-)

Read Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally and think about it.
P.S. What about moral women?

Moral code serve as a way to control and manipulate people. Once I know you moral code, I now have the ability to provoke guilt and self-punishment in you.
If you haven't been maintaining your moral code, you are probably feeling guilty and blaming others for your own actions and choices. Your choices have nothing to do with an immoral world. You are responsible for your own actions.

I know that doing the wrong thing for the right reason is still wrong.
I know that if I would be ashamed to tell my mother what I did, then I shouldn't do it. (And I am thirty-something!)
I know that if I wouldn't want it done to me, I shouldn't do it to someone else.
And that is how *I* maintain my moral code in this immoral world.

By doing what's right and righting what's wrong.
There's no need for the moral man to become an immoral sheep and follow the crowds.

Great Question... my answer is perhaps what i know i/one should do and not necessarily what i do (unfortunately) but i think one accomplishes this by staying strong spiritually, alligning oneself with other ppl living a good moral life and staying in touch and true to one's self. (reading significant books, expressing themselves regularly and not denying or suppressing their feelings, thoughts and by keeping a servants heart and doing a lot of good work to benefit others - those things all help keep you on a good moral highway in my opinion.....

By understanding that while in the short term cheating may appear to get you what you want short term, over the long run people recognize and reward a good person.

Allow ones self to be led by the Spirit of God.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

By knowing who he is in the larger sceme - his relationship to his God, his community, his family and co-workers.
Immorality means a breach of community with one or all of those - and also a loss of self as well.
Selfishness slices off a piece of somebody else, and a piece of me, and consumes both with no fruit.

And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

it all depends on his choices. If all choices are immoral and its pressured upon him, then yes he will become immoral. As we have all seen, temptation is easy to give in to.
