When I find people asking this question, I tend to think that they have given up on something. Agree/disagree?

Yes. Or they've come to a point where they've become very frustrated and weary of life, and are desperate for any reason to justify going through another day.

What is the point, afterall? Do these questions and answers really make any difference?

So, I disagree.

But again some people understand the deeper meaning of this life - that all this is just a passing phase just a mirage where we are mere puppets. And I think most often these people would rather keep quiet than even saying what's the point.

And of course, those who say What's the point are ones who don't want to involve themselves in some cause, some effort, have given up, want to just idle and be worthless (even in this worthless life - I feel one should strive to do something worthwhile).

Sometimes it does mean they've given up. But there are different reasons for giving up. Not necessarily giving up just because something is too difficult - at times it's in realization that something is futile (that the imagined reward for effort or labors looses it's value or importance).
Other times they may be of the opinion that an argument is mute (especially if it is only theory - no evidence or way of proving) There is also the deeper state of mind that "all is vanity" That ultimately, all of our labors and "great works or thoughts" are meaningless/amount to nothing (The concept of Tao is the closest to this that I know of).

It could go either way. But I tend to think that they want to know the point of the question or conversation, etc..

Disagree: Some things are just pointless.

What's the point?

when i find myself in a position of having to communicate with a complete and total idiot.

I say-what is the point? =negative

when i ramble on while i am trying to get an idea across, they finally say, "okay, what's the point?"

gets me on track and that is a positive.

I think there seeking clarifacation or justification because they need someone to make it clearer to their understanding thinking it won't make a difference, so they ask what is the point.

Agree, they can't see any point in what's going on, so they look to the wisdom of yahoo answers.

I think that they are about to give up on something and want reasons to hold on to it.
