The assumption is that there is no afterlife. Neither heaven nor hell. Debate the validity and testability of this assumption at another time please.

Is afterlife essential to the belief in God? IS it possible to have a God if he/she doesn't promise life after death? Would religion and the idea of God cease to exist?

This is a debate I had with my freind, Josh, in highschool. I was messing with him one day and I said "did you do your economics homework?" when he freaked out and said "what? we had homework?" I said "no". Then he was sort of mad, and said "You lied to me!"

I said that I didn't lie to him because I merely asked a question, and a lie, according to the dictionary, is "a statement spoken with intent to decieve." A question, I explained, is not a statement. His argument that my question had an IMPLIED statement, that was in fact "we have economics homework", that was stated to decieve.

I still say I didn't lie.
He still says I did.

Your thoughts? Can a question be a lie?

From the beginning of our quest for knowledge we have been gazing into the ski, wondering what was out there in the far reaches of space. We’ve always been watching the sky, many hoping to find some sign of intelligent life other than our own out in the cosmos, many attaching religious significance to natural wonders, many creating myths around the unexplained.

We’ve always been watching.

But the question here is: who is watching us? And are we sure we really want to know?

Sometimes I believe we're the unknowing and unwilling participant in some vast 'Smile! You're On Cosmic Candid Camera!'

My son got into some trouble at school and as punishment, I took away his iPod. I looked through it and it's full of Coldplay. I didn't know that he was gay, and I don't have a problem with that, but I figure that there must be some special ways to punish gay boys.

Ya' know how people say that their generation is the best and all that stuff? That they had the best times, that they were mainly around in the hippy era? But what about the worst generation? Probarly on my sole opinion only, I think it would have to be....ours. This generation is just a whole generation of pretentious pricks and assholes who follow everything says, and they all these really stupid and harsh stereotypes. I know that a whole lot of people in here aren't like that, but sometimes I get tired of watching people spend 50 bucks on REMOTELY ripped pants or 20 bucks for some Rap CD that has only one good CD, and that's the song they play ALL the time on the radio. It's kinda stupid, but for once, I'm agreeing with the old people, our generation is just quickly circling the crapper, because sooner or later, this generation is just gonna pretentious adults and assholes who go with the flow.
