I personally believe that when people say this they are saying that something is relevant for the average person or that it is an universal truth of some sort. Celebrities that are keeping it real are usually involved in activities they think are everyday activities for most people. Back in my day we always said "Well in the real world . . ." which was rather stupid because everybody lives in their own little environment with their own friends and values. Both saying seem a little silly to me now. I must be a geezer.
