This is a good question. As you can see most respondants here are speaking of "soul" as the spirit. I noticed there was a distinction in the Greek NT where two different words are translated soul and spirit, but I havent check the Greek words.

I do have experience translating Ancient Hebrew and I discovered that the word translated "soul" means literally "person" NPS (nun pe sin) in Ancient Hebrew. So everywhere you see "soul" in the OT is is actually "person". Spirit is a separate word in the OT.

Probably in the NT soul is "mind" but I would have to check to be sure.

I believe humans have two parts a body and a spirit; the mind may be singular kind of like a left brain and a right brain, but there I am speculating. But I am fairly sure that some theologians have gotten all of this wrong, originally owing to the mistranslation of NPS.

There isn't a difference. I question the existence of a soul anyway. Think about all your experiences, they cant be perceived without the hardware of your body i.e. brain, body even emotion. So if the source of all experience is created from within the body, as a result of its interactions with the world outside it, how can there possibly be a soul that exists independently of the body? Body and soul are one and the same.

Traditionally, the "soul" is considered an aspect of a person's identity that transcends body (and some believe thought). There's some discrepency between whether one's mind is their soul or not. If the mind is the soul, then the soul is really nothing but the electrical synapses (according to those who follow science). On the other hand, if the soul isn't the mind, it's largely irrelevant; after all, we all want our identity to be about us, and that's our minds. Or thoughts, our feelings, our beliefs; if these aren't part of the soul, how is the soul really our identity?

The soul is the immaterial part of a person; the actuating cause of an individual life. The body is the entire structure of an organism (especially an animal or human being).

This is a seriously loaded question. By asking it you are accepting the fundamental premises of the Platonic/ Cartesian dualist world view. To answer it (even with the intention of undermining it) would be to accept two fundamenally contentious (and in my view fallacious) premises:

a) that their is such a thing as a soul
b) that this is distinct from the body

There are no souls.

Strictly speaking, there are no bodies either. The so-called body of a person is the entire person, thoughts and movements and life and everything. There isn't a 'body' distinct from the person. Human beings walk and talk and love -- they don't have specialized bits of anatomy to do it for them.

The body is the container the soul inhabits. When we die, some religions believe that the soul goes up to heaven or equivalents.

The body is returned to the earth.

the soul is the guiding part of you. the connection completely with God. the body will eventually die and go back to the dust. the soul will continue the journey until it comes to the end, which is at God's side with all the other souls that have made it. life is just a learning stage where we mature and learn of his love for us. our souls touch others, inspiring, teaching, and forever in touch with God. we are all part of the one, for he is part of us. i hope this has not confused you any worse. let God guide you and all your questions will be answered. for behold i stand at the door and knock, and if any man shall open i shall come in and dwell forever. if he seeks, he shall find. read, explore and find the answers to all.
blessed be,
Elizabeth

The body is our physical body - bones, skin muscle etc
The soul is our etheric body, composed from energy that permeates our physical body to integrate our emotions and instincts that create physical reactions to our physical body.
