Why did the Persians change the name of their country to "Iraq"?

Personally, I prefer "Persia" ... one speaks of Persian Miniature Paintings, Persian Rugs, Persian Rice ... Persian Cats .... somehow the romance is not there, to my ear!

I am sure there is a reason, but I am just wondering if anyone here happens to know what it is. Thank you.

Why did England and France declare war on Germany in 1939?

And not the USSR and Germany? The USSR invaded Poland at the same time. Churchill wanted to declare war on them both.

By spring 1940, Germany had taken over Austria, Checkloslovakia, and Poland.

By 1940, the USSR was fighting Finland, took over Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. and siezed a large part of Poland.

Again, what was the reason for the free world attacking Germany? Germany seems to me the lesser of two evils given that their the two countries' civilian terror was about the same.

I am writing a report on a historical event that happened before 2000. I need it to be interesting, NO WARS! It has to be something an 8th grader can read about without wanting to rip the book. And it needs to be a big enough event that i can find at least 3 books on it.

What do you know about the Akkadian civilization?
