well an assassination usually is politically or worldly driven where as a murder is...well emotionally driven i guess.look at you with the great questions all the time!

Very interesting question which had me running for the dictionary - which was of little help. It is, I think, a question of how important a person is. A politician or other leader (royalty) is always 'assassinated' rather than murdered. Also, I believe it was said that John Lennon was assassinated, not murdered. In the case of a person not a politician, perhaps they have to be known internationally.

Webster's defines assassination as:
1 : to injure or destroy unexpectedly and treacherously
2 : to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons
Number 2 seems to apply to your question the most. However, Wikipedia defines assassination as having a political "or idealogical" reason for the murder. Which would explain the assassination of people like Lohn Lennon, Martin Luther King and Ghandi.
Both describe it as having been plotted treacherously to kill another person.

Assassinated is paying someone to kill someone else, murder is when you do your own dirty work.
