I am writing a report on a historical event that happened before 2000. I need it to be interesting, NO WARS! It has to be something an 8th grader can read about without wanting to rip the book. And it needs to be a big enough event that i can find at least 3 books on it.

The Berlin Airlift

In 1948 Germany had been occupied by four countries; The US, Great Britain and France as well as the USSR.
Germany was divided into West and East with the capitol, Berlin also divided into West and East. The Western sectors of Germany as well as Berlin were controlled by the first three countries with the Eastern Sector of both Germany and Berlin controlled by the USSR. Additionally, Berlin was entirely within the Eastern sector of Germany.

The western sector of Berlin relied upon railroad delivery of goods such as food and coal for heating and electricity generation.

Early in 1948 the Soviets closed the rail and road routes to Berlin hoping to starve the US, UK and France into leaving Berlin in the hands of the USSR.

Refusing to back down to the Soviet challenge but also not wanting to provoke a war with the USSR the Americans along with the British began a massive airlift of supplies into Berlin called "Operation Vittles".

It was a stirring example of a solution to a difficult problem without resorting to war.

There are quite a few books on the subject; Google "Berlin Airlift 1948. The Wikipedia will provide great references.

Hmmmm. Something positive rather than catastrophic.
Something interesting to a teenage girl.
How 'bout the story of Victoria becoming queen of Britain in 1837? She was an 18 year old suddenly expected to rule the country that, by the end of her reign in 1901, would possess the greatest empire in the history of the world.
Plenty of books on Queen Victoria, and the reading should be interesting for you. Imagine yourself becoming the ruler of a great nation as a teenager.
