Leif Erickson explored because he was forced from Europe for mass murder of people who angered him. during his exploration he found Canada and called it kananda but he feared native rebellion so he sailed some more until he discovered America.

Leif left The North lands under duress because of a killing that he was blamed for, he took his followers and went West. He always felt there was "something" in the west.

This was when they discovered "Greenland" they stayed for a number of years. There was a drought they didn't have any ideas what this was. The winters were hard, the people died.
Their settlements are still there, made of stone, piled upon each other, partly in the ground.
Leif sailed back to his homeland with his news of another land but, here is where it gets lost.

It was believed they sailed further West, in the St. Lawrence river and actually followed it further West into the Great Lakes. There are some areas that show there was a visit by early Vikings.
There are also settlements in Labrador that are now being examined, thought to be from the early Vikings, but from Leif ? it remains to be seen. These may have been the "Vine land" they wrote about, the wild grapes that grew in the immediate areas.
There was also mention of "terrible" natives who were warriers and tried to slay them on a number of occasions. Why they left ? it's lost to time.

There was a drought that was just ending, there were very dry years, hard winters, lack of food, Natives that tried to kill them, ?
