Wasn't Baghdad and Iraq etc. the setting for Arabian nights? Didn't it used to be a beautiful country full of nobility, mystique and riches? Jewel of the sands and all that? When did that change? Cause from what I've seen of it, it's dirty, poor and (more recently) bombed all to hell. Is anyone able to pinpoint when the country stopped being a place of dangerous, smoldering beauty and became the craphole it is now?

A historian teaching in Nagasaki University has recently written in a daily news paper in India that about 35000 people were killed in the USSR during the Stalin era. They were members of the Old Bolshevik party, officers of the Red army and intellectuals who supported Trotsky and Lenin. No ordinary people were involved. Is this correct?

I saw a question posted on here a few days ago about the holocaust, and an overwhelmingly amount of people said it never even happened...why do people think this?? And if it is a hoax, which i believe it isn't, but if it is, what would be the motive of staging something like this?

it seems we know much more about the Romans, their movements and the exact dates... than we know about many groups that were around long after the Roman Empire collapsed...

we seem to know much about their battles and wars.. and the actions surrounding them... and they seem to be much more factual and less bias, on the whole, than most other historical accounts from anywhere near the same period...

I am writing a paper and I have to argue whether progressives were reformers who wanted to expand democracy or conservatives who sought to impose order. I know they wanted to spread democracy by having woman's suffrage and a secret ballot, but I do not know how they wanted to impose order. Any help??

I'm writing an article about nationalism. So far I have not come across a single piece of evidence pointing to nationalism as being good for the/an international community. Are there any historic examples of nationalism or patriotism being a positive force? Obviously it has helped countries, but usually at the expense of others. Are there any times where the world has been bettered by nationalism?
