According to the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day (Friday being the first and Saturday being the second). This is what is celebrated on Easter Sunday.

The original what?
The origin?
Jesus's life, death and resurrection.
The forty days before Easter symbolize his 40 days in the desert. Good Friday is when he died, Easter Sunday when he resurrected.

Easter was the day that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the grave after being crucified. I don't know where the easter bunny and painting eggs came from though.
