He was a socialist, but better known as a communist (although communism is an ECONOMIC system, NOT a political system). Trotsky was more in favor of the Leninist style of governing, and was very close to VI Lenin himself. Trotsky was favored to become the leader of the Soviet government by Lenin's followers and most of the Soviet before Stalin slandered and used his political power. He was less dictatorial than Stalin.

Trotsky real name( Lev Bronstien,) proclaimed that the only way for the party to maintain its revolutionary mandate was through war, a constant state of war must be kept. if an external enemy doesn't exist one one must be found, or the people themselves become the enemy. his ideas although denounced by Stalin were much of the basis for the terror famine and purges etc. of early Soviet Union, Factions in many governments have offed up similar philosophy's including the Leo Strauss philosophy of today's Neo-con

He was an orthodox Marxist and Bolshevik, fought in the Russian Revolution with Lenin.

He argued for world revolution (not just socialism in the Soviet Union) and permanent revolution (no government is the final answer or the final unchangeable expression of socialism).
